by Dr. Kenneth Wapnick
Kenneth has described A Course in Miracles as taking us on a journey from mindlessness to mindfulness, as we learn to shift our identification from the body to the mind. Our ultimate reality is spirit, but the Course, Kenneth says, is inviting us to take an intermediate step on our journey back to the home we never left and to identify ourselves first as mind. While we choose to remain identified with the body, believing it is who we are, we neither know what our mind truly is, limiting it in our misguided thinking to a manifestation of the body and the brain, nor are we aware of its power to create illusion on such a seemingly cosmic and convincing scale. And yet the mind's most significant power is simply the power to choose between two teachers, the ego or the Holy Spirit. Each teacher offers a completely different way of looking at the illusion of a separate self and a world that we have made real in our belief and have taken so seriously. In that simple choice of teachers lies the difference between continuing to sleep and dream a dream of pain, conflict, and fear, or shifting gradually to gentler, more peaceful dreams of forgiveness and healing that lead the mind towards awakening. For the month of August, we would like to suggest several audio publications where Kenneth explores the Course's teachings on the mind and its power.

"THE MIND'S THE THING"
Kenneth Wapnick, Ph.D.
In this program, Kenneth explains how the power of the mind to choose the ego is the same power that can choose against it. And so, the ego, the part of our mind that is invested in maintaining a separate individual but illusory identity, must devise a strategy to keep us from remembering that power, so that we become, for all practical purposes, mindless. The world and the body are central to that strategy, but only after we first make sin, guilt, and fear very real in our mind. Kenneth discusses how the Holy Spirit's plan seeks to expose the ego's deceptions and make us aware that our mind has the power to choose how to look at the world, ourselves, and our thoughts, essentially with or without judgment, with conflict or peace being the result.

THE MIND: "A GIANT'S STRENGTH"

THE MIND:
"A GIANT'S STRENGTH"
Kenneth Wapnick, Ph.D.
Kenneth discusses how the key to the ego's attempts at self-preservation is to conceal the power or strength of the mind to choose between two very different interpretations of the thought of separation, one that proclaims it is quite serious and the other that asserts it is really nothing at all. The ego has persuaded us to use that power to choose against ourselves so that we believe not only that separation is attack and sin, but that we must conceal our guilt and sin in a body and a world so that all our pain and unhappiness seem to be the result of forces outside of us that are beyond our control and have nothing to do with the power of our own deluded mind. If this is the ego's strategy, the Holy Spirit's simple correction is to help us get back in touch with that same power of the mind to choose so that we can learn we can make a different choice right now, leading us gently to a growing awareness of peace and love. Forgiveness is the key.

STRENGTHENING THE MIND'S IMMUNE SYSTEM

STRENGTHENING
THE MIND'S IMMUNE SYSTEM
Kenneth Wapnick, Ph.D.
All our efforts to strengthen and protect the body against the many perceived threats against its health, safety, and well-being are really nothing more than clever attempts employed by the ego to keep our attention riveted where the problem is not—in our body and the world—and to fail to recognize and reinforce the strength of the mind to find sure safety and protection in the choice of a different inner teacher or trainer. The most powerful training program to assure that the mind grows in its strength to protect itself from the self-inflicted assaults of the ego is to learn to practice forgiveness as often as we can throughout the day, which lifts the heavy weight of guilt and fear from our mind, with an essential assist that comes from choosing a different Trainer.
